Hello, these are strange and trying times. I hope you are well. I'm setting up this blog to provide daily resources and direction for Mecca Glen Grade 5 students. We'll be focusing mainly on literacy and math. Alberta Education 's guidelines suggest Grade 5 students should spend about 30 minutes on math and 30 minutes on literacy each day. Each weekday you should see a new post providing activities and exercises. I've likely given too much for the first day. Some activities will spill over into the next day. There's bound to be some bumps in the road with this online delivery. Please let me know if there any broken links or if a video isn't working. If you have any questions or concerns please don't hesitate to contact me.
Students will be able to sign up for virtual meeting times with me each day through a Google Form. The link for this form will be in each day's post. Students may only sign up for one meeting per day and a maximum of 5 students can be in each meeting. I'll adjust this as necessary moving forward. If there is something urgent let me know and we'll figure something out. When it's time for the meeting, I'll sent out invitations via email. I want to connect with each student at least once a week. If we can't connect through these meetings, I'll make a phone on Friday. For those of you who wish do a little more, there is a list of extra resources on the side that you may be interested in exploring. I anticipate adding to this list. For now here's a brief explanation of each.

For math we will primarily be using IXL. IXL sign in can be accessed through the Mecca Glen website or this link. IXL usernames and passwords have been emailed to each student. The program is designed for students to independently work on math skills. I will be assigning specific skills each day. Some students have used IXL in class this year and may have already completed the assigned skill. If this is so, I'd like these students to complete the assigned skill again. It should be easy to complete and it's a good review. These are the IXL Units we'll be focusing on:
Fractions & Mixed Numbers Fraction Equivalence & Ordering Decimals Add & Subtract Decimals Two-dimensional Figures Three-dimensional Figures Probability & Statistics Data & Graphs Symmetry & Transformations Any student who wishes to work on more math may choose from any of the other remaining units. I'm unsure of how many skills to assign each day. I'll be adjusting the number of skills as we go along. Mastery (completion) of each skill will not be required. It's most important that students practice math skills. In the past, some students have experienced a great deal of frustration when using this program. If a student is experiencing frustration I'm available for help. We'll start slowly with a review of work we've already done. If it's too much then it's time for a break, time to contact Mr. E, or time to leave it alone for the day. For literacy we will primarily be using Google Drive to share assignments and student work. It's very important that students always create a new Google Doc in his or her LA folder in Drive. This allows me to access student work.
